Topping-out ceremony for the Freiberg core sample archive

A significant milestone for a special construction project: on 4 June 2026, a topping-out ceremony was held in Freiberg to mark the completion of the new Central Saxon Drill Core and Sample Archive. Under the leadership of the Chemnitz branch of the Saxon State Property and Construction Management Agency (SIB), a modern archive, research and teaching centre is being built on the site of the former Jägerkaserne barracks. In future, the facility will be operated by the State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology in cooperation with the TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

The new building will provide the facilities required for the professional storage and processing of around 150 kilometres of drill core material on approximately 3,000 pallets, as well as more than 12,000 small load carriers containing rock samples. In addition to large-scale mobile storage systems, the facility will include laboratory, research and teaching areas, as well as specially designed areas for delivery by lorry. The approved total construction costs amount to 22.5 million euros; handover to the future users is scheduled for 2027.

LOGSOL has been involved in the project since the very first planning stages. Since 2019, the planning team has contributed its expertise to the development of a holistic logistics concept. This has included, amongst other things, the design of efficient material and information flows, the sizing of storage and functional areas, the investigation of suitable storage and transport technologies, and the development and evaluation of layout options. The aim was to enable the archive to operate in a cost-effective, secure and scalable manner in the long term.

The topping-out ceremony thus marks another visible milestone in the realisation of this construction project. The new building will provide a lasting boost to the infrastructure for geological research and academic education in the Free State of Saxony.
